Arsenal now look to be in pole position to secure the services of Sunderland defender Logan Pye when the 15-year-old is old enough to join them.

Pye, who will turn 16 in October, had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, but according to The Sun, he is now poised to join Arsenal in the January transfer window.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery will no doubt be pleased with the addition of another promising defender for the club, as Pye can play both as a centre-back or full-back.

Despite his young age Pye has already made five appearances for Sunderland under18’s and has also played for the Three Lions, when he made his England under16’s debut against Turkey in 2018.

No transfer fee for Pye has yet been confirmed, although United were reportedly considering making a £500,000 bid plus add-ons to sign the defender during the summer.

If Pye does decide to swap the Stadium of Light for the Emirates will be joining several young stars who have recently made the switch to the north London club.

During the summer Emery brought in several new players including Nicolas Pepe from Lille, David Luiz from Chelsea and Kieran Tierney from Celtic.

The Spaniard also brought in two young prospects with William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli joining the club.

Saliba, who plays as a centre-back, signed from Saint Etienne for £27m.

However, Emery cannot utilise the Frenchman this campaign as the 18-year-old has been sent back to the Ligue 1 club on a season-long loan, as Saint Etienne insisted that it was a non-negotiable condition on a transfer being agreed.

However, as the defender is currently sidelined with injury, he is now back training with Arsenal as he works his way back to full-fitness.

And last month Saint-Etienne head coach Ghislain Printant gave no timescale on the defender’s return to the French club.

“Saliba had an operation earlier this week,” he said.

“We will take our time with his return.”

As for Martinelli, he signed from Brazilian side Ituano in the summer.

During his time in South America the 18-year-old scored 10 goals in 34 games since making his debut in back 2017.

And the young striker had already made his Gunners debut, albeit a brief appearance, when he came off the bench for six minutes during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.
