Calum Chambers is “in control” of the Arsenal right-back position and therefore Hector Bellerin should not yet be starting in the Premier League, claims former Gunners defender Martin Keown.

Chambers started on the right side of defence against in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Monday and impressed Keown.

Bellerin, meanwhile, made his first start of the campaign in the 4-0 Europa League win over Standard Liege on Thursday after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Following that match, Keown was asked what his preferred back four would be from the current Gunners squad.

Bellerin can break in but Chambers looks a different player more recently

And, surprisingly, he left out Bellerin but said there was a spot for summer signing Kieran Tierney.

“I think Tierney comes in,” Keown said on BT Sport.

“I think Sokratis [Papastathopoulos] plays and David Luiz, I’m not going to argue with it.

“[Rob] Holding has a chance to break that partnership, he’s good enough to do it.

“Again he’s coming back from injury and Bellerin can break in but Chambers looks a different player more recently.

“I think [Ainsley] Maitland-Niles now has lost that place. Chambers, I think he’s in control. I didn’t see enough from Bellerin [against Standard].

“I think [against Bournemouth on Sunday] it will probably be the back four that played against Manchester United, I see no changes.

“But Tierney, I’d be tempted to play him.”

Keown was impressed with Tierney on his first European appearance for the club and says regular Arsenal left-back Sead Kolasinac now has a fight to keep his spot in the side.

“Tierney looks the closest to pushing his way, forcing his way, into the team, a bit early for Bellerin,” he added.

“This fella here, I was out of my seat a few times, Tierney on that left-hand side.

“Kolasinac is under pressure and when players are under pressure, that’s when they have to perform.”
